Here are Manners 'n' More Companion Dog Training, we will help you understand the behaviour of your dog so you can develop a harmonious relationship with them.
Here are some common dog behaviour issues and tips on how to resolve them.
Dogs love chewing, especially teething puppies. It feels good on raw gums, and young puppies use their mouths to explore their new environment. Chewing is natural and unavoidable, so prevention is the best cure for chewing. Dog-proof your home by moving items like wires, power cords, cleaning supplies, and small objects out of your dog’s reach.
Growling might not be a natural response all the time. A dog growling at a person over food can escalate into larger issues. A good solution is to set small bowls of food next to each other. As your dog goes to eat one of the bowls, move one of them to the other side, within the dog’s reach. Repeat this until the dog realizes that human hands are no threat to his food.
Every time your dog does this behaviour, go see why your dog is doing it. If it has a valid reason, like a stranger near your property, praise the dog and then tell him to be quiet. If it is barking for the wrong reasons, tell the dog to be quiet and immediately go back inside the house. Your pet will soon see that barking is acceptable, but not always. Your dog will then learn to bark for the ‘good’ reasons.
Train the dog to stay out of the garbage when you are not home. Correct your dog when he gets into the garbage while you are home. Buy a heavy-duty lidded trashcan and take it out before it fills up.
